Werribee Gorge is the traditional country of the Wathaurung people to whom it holds social, cultural and spiritual significance. The waterbodies, distinctive natural features and places of ecological value within this area have cultural heritage. This work was made in an effort to better understand the Wathaurung people's connection to country and the devastating history colonialism had on the land. Sadly, colonialism has violently divided history into us and them, but if we are to never repeat the genocide of our past and present then the history must become ours.
I acknowledge my part in the oppression of Aboriginal people and their land, and will forever seek to understand the past, the present and future impacts of colonialism. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging and stand with them in the fight for freedom. I use my position of privilege to work as an ally for a future where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's land, culture, traditions and language is restored.
